Finding Clarity in Your Medicine

  • Grand Street Healing Project 105 Grand Street Brooklyn, NY, 11249 United States (map)

How do you respond when people ask, "What do you do for a living?" This can be especially challenging when you carry multiple identities, or have carved out a career for yourself that fits outside of a traditional role or title. Join Jumakae visiting from Long Beach, CA (Chumash/Tongva territory) for a donation based storytelling workshop to help articulate what it is you do in the world with embodied confidence. This is especially for you if you're on a journey of reclaiming the medicine of your ancestors, yet struggle with what that even means if you or your ancestors have historically experienced displacement, immigration, or enslavement.  When you can articulate your story medicine, you can begin planting seeds to call in your soul-aligned people that are praying for what it is you have to offer. (Those certifications are more than centerpieces, wall flowers, and trophies collecting dust!) Additionally, we'll be calling in your chosen ancestors for guidance by opening up with a guided meditation and ceremony. Please bring a journal, something to write with, and an offering for our community altar that you'll be able to take back with you after the workshop. **Because this is an interactive experience, you will be invited to participate in a breakout session to practice sharing your medicine in small groups while having something clear and concise to walk away with - whether it be for an interview, intimate conversation, or a speaking engagement.**

This class is taught by:

June Marisa Kaewsith, also known as "Jumakae," is a multidisciplinary artist, wellness consultant, and storytelling coach. After spending her twenties as an artist and community organizer inside of nonprofit organizations, she began craving an alternative narrative to healing and justice beyond the struggles. Curiosity led her back to Thailand, where she studied with a traditional midwife to learn the ways of her ancestors. That's when she realized that healing went beyond hospital visits and sage bundles, but often looked like shared stories around the fire sitting with our youth and elders. Thus sparked her calling to assist others in reflecting on the legacy they're here to leave behind as ancestors-in-the-making. As a life doula, June currently facilitates coaching programs and retreats for people of the global majority who are seeking clarity in their message and confidence in their speaking so that they can share their story, lead transformational workshops, and birth their legacy from a place of alignment. With her passion for the arts and somatic healing, she holds mindfulness and storytelling workshops for organizations and individuals to strengthen team relationships and wellness culture from a social justice, decolonized, and trauma-informed lens. Her spiritual practice includes meditating with a green smoothie in the morning, and practicing exotic floor work while eating plantain chips in the evening. June loves embodying the complexities of life and spirituality, and invites others to do the same. You can listen to her Tedx Talk, "How to Connect With Your Ancestors," subscribe to her weekly podcast at www.yourstorymedicine.com, or follow her journey on IG @jumakae
